It all started with one study abroad trip. The very first time I jetted off to a new country was when I studied abroad in Salzburg, Austria. To say this beautiful city has enchanted me, would be an understatement. Salzburg has a romantic, historical vibe that might have you singing. It has been a beautiful backdrop for a beloved film, The Sound of Music. It is home to one of the most famous composers in history, Amadeus Mozart. This city will enchant you.

This city has 5 must see sights for your next stellar trip. It is extremely hard to pick just 5, but I know you will be satisfied with these views and ‘wow’ moments.

1 // Mönchsberg

The Mönchsberg is a beautiful mountain park nestled next to the Altstadt downtown. It is the perfect place to take an afternoon stroll through nature and people watch. The mountain will give you 360 degree views of Salzburg. Make your way to the fortress to have a better view and photograph a few historic rock walls.

2 // Museum of Modern Art

The best view in town lies next to the Museum of Modern Art on the Mönchsberg. Stand against the rock wall and your gaze will take you across the rooftops of the Altstadt. It is beautiful in any season. However, I think the winter season has quite a magical touch. Do you agree? From this view, you will even be able to look across the river to the Neustadt.

3 // Salzburger Dom

Breathtaking. I have a personal fascination with German and Austrian cathedrals. They are the perfect glimpse into history and fantastic architecture. The Salzburger Dom is a must see when in town. Walk the grand aisle ways and look through the glass windows. The bells are my favorite part, and they will leave you memorized in place. I have a million and one recordings of those bells. The Dom is very historic, and it was the baptism place of Amadeus Mozart.

4 // Kapuzinerberg

I did not discover this little treasure until the end of my trip. The Kapuzinerberg stands opposite of the Mönchsberg. It is a beautiful wildlife park and home to a monastery. Walk the trails through the trees and you will encounter old town walls. Say ‘hallo’ to a kind Austrian as they walk by and enjoy this little haven away from the bustle of the city.

5 // Mirabell Gardens

When you walk the gardens of Mirabell, you will hear the distant singing of children. You might very well be singing yourself, because this location was famous in the musical, “The Sound of Music.” Dance around the fountains like Maria and the children and enjoy this lovely garden full of flowers and fountains. It’s the perfect place to lounge on a sunny Austrian day.

Every time I visit Salzburg, I visit these places. It’s absolutely beautiful and offers the true ‘heart’ of Salzburg. When you take your next trip, you must try these spots. There is a reason the Austrians visit these places everyday. Find out for yourself.
