“I’m going on an adventure.” If you’re a ‘Hobbit’ fan, this quote will quickly come to mind when thinking of the main character, Bilbo Baggins. Full of adventurous spirit, Bilbo Baggins in the movie ‘The Hobbit’ follows a group of dwarves and a wizard to rescue the dwarves homeland from a dragon. Even if ‘The Hobbit’ is not your cup of tea, Hobbiton in Matamata, New Zealand is a must see attraction in the area.
Enjoy this quick guide to Hobbiton.
Hobbiton is a real movie set and was used when filming ‘The Hobbit.’ You will walk through small homes (Hobbits are only 3 feet tall!) built into the side of a hill. This is where the Hobbit Bilbo Baggins lived, “Bag End.” You will also see the party tree, the arch bridge and the mill.
Hobbiton is a guided tour lasting around two hours. Enjoy walking through the movie set looking at little houses used during the film. You might even giggle when you recognize a scene from the movie.
After the tour, don’t miss a beer at The Green Dragon, another important structure from the movie. The beer is brewed locally and you will enjoy the atmosphere in this little place.
You can travel to Matamata from several places in the north island. It is completely doable to make a trip from Auckland and many different tours are offered. I would recommend the InterCity Hobbiton Tour or a tour with Great Sights. Before you embark on your movie adventure, make sure to watch ‘The Hobbit’ to get a feel of Matamata and New Zealand. The film offers breathtaking video footage of New Zealand that will leave you wanting more.
