Over the last several months, I’ve been playing with the idea of meaningful travel. ‘Meaningful’ is really my word of the year, and I’ve been actively reflecting on its meaning. My travel experiences will still consist of fantastic museums and attractions; however, I feel in my heart and soul the longing for something more. I want travel experiences that really resonates with me and have a positive impact on my life. I want to share these experiences with you [my readers] to encourage all of us to think of traveling in a bigger perspective. Less as tourists and more as global ambassadors. THIS IS THE YEAR OF MEANINGFUL TRAVEL
I wish travel to not only enrich my life, but also the lives of the people that I impact. Simply, I want to help people. How will I do this? I’m not sure. I’m still trying to figure all this out, and my meaning behind these words. However, that’s the journey, and it’s not going to happen over night. I want to share this journey with you. After writing a short post on My Personal Search for Meaningful Travel and my 2017 Travel Destinations, these are a few ideas that I have in the works [by country].
Now, I will by no means plan a volunteer opportunity for every country I visit; rather, I might have a meaningful experience by sitting in a coffee shop and people watching. This is the goal for England. Overall, the idea is to be actively searching for this type of adventure.
I’m officially enrolled and ecstatic about the Diverbo program in Spain. This program will provide the opportunity to interact and speak conversational English with enthusiastic learners. It will be a great experience learning about other cultures, hearing stories and interacting with people.
I hope this experience will take me to the rural countryside of Portugal where I will see breathtaking landscapes. Workaway provides cultural exchange experiences in exchange for room and board. The possibilities are endless with this website, and they can take you anywhere.
Peru. It’s a beautiful country full of rich colors, cultures and landscapes. I can’t wait to experience this beautiful country. I’ve recently come in contact with a new organization called Maximoniviel. They provide several opportunities from working with children, teaching English, saving sea turtles and planting trees in the Amazon rain forest. Endless possibilities! I personally like the opportunity to interact with young children, by helping them with homework or teaching English. However, the experience of planting and documenting trees in the Amazon rain forest sounds pretty unique.
I recently found another website that might be a great start in finding programs to encourage meaningful travel.
As I continue my journey towards meaningful travel, I hope you will join me. This type of journey will take a great deal of reflection and time. It won’t happen overnight. What are your thoughts on this? Do you know of any programs that provide meaningful travel?
